Unique sites are what make a good trip to the Galapagos a great one, and if you’re looking for unique, Post Office Bay is a must-see. Post Office Bay is located on Floreana Island in the Galapagos. It is known as the site of the first ever post office on this chain of islands. In 1793, a group of whalers placed a barrel in this location and called it a post office. Men travelling the sea would leave addressed letters in the barrel and hope that the next seamen would deliver it.
Today, visitors can leave their own postcards in this barrel. They can also search through the mail, looking for a piece that they might be able to hand deliver themselves. This site is a great place for visitors to learn a little more about the history behind the generations of people who lived on Floreana, while leaving their own contribution as well. The Galapagos Islands are filled with beautiful beaches, wildlife and scenery that will take your breath away. But it’s the distinctive places like Post Office Bay that make for a truly unforgettable visit.

It felt like the scene of a movie, and this photo captured the feeling of that moment perfectly.
