New Zealand | Public and Private Gardens, Nature and Culture

About this trip

With its rich volcanic soil and temperate climate, New Zealand boasts a botanic diversity that’s matched by the Kiwis’ passion for gardening. Join National Tropical Botanical Garden and discover a bower of beauty as you travel from the sub-tropical north to the sub-alpine south island, visiting several acclaimed gardens, many deemed nationally or internationally “significant” by the New Zealand Gardens Trust. In a land of superlatives, the collections at Ohinetahi, Ayrlies, and Hamilton Gardens stand out, but so do the national parks, wineries, and Maori cultural sites you’ll celebrate in “the Land of the Long White Cloud.”

Highlights

  • Delve into “The Story of Gardens” through five award-winning collections at Hamilton Gardens.
  • Discover New Zealand’s “Garden City” and its 150-year-old crown jewel, Christchurch Botanical Gardens.
  • Revel in the mirror-like beauty of Milford Sound in Fiordlands National Park on an overnight cruise.
  • Walk among the treetops and the undergrowth along the Natural Trail and Canopy Walkway at Otari-Wilton Bush Native Botanic Garden.
  • Explore Maori culture in the geothermal wonderland of Rotorua.

Meet your leader

Michael J. DeMotta

Mr. Michael “Mike” DeMotta has served as head curator for living collections for NTBG organization since the latter part of 2006. He previously served as Horticulturist and then Manager of Living Collections at NTBG’s Limahuli Garden and Preserve.

Mr. DeMotta was born and raised in Honolulu and attended the University of Hawai’i. His interest in horticulture was inherited from his family, and he began growing orchids and ferns at the age of 12. His exposure in school to Hawaiian studies and the art of hula led to a keen interest in native Hawaiian plants, which he began growing in earnest in 1997. During this time he developed many of his own techniques to germinate plants from seeds and cuttings which were otherwise difficult to grow.

In addition to curating the collections for all of NTBG’s gardens and preserves, and overseeing plant records, Mike is responsible for other activities in the Lawa’i Valley Conservation and Horticulture Center, including plant production.
