Costa Rica | Raptor Migration Festival in Sarapiquí

Costa Rica | Raptor Migration Festival in Sarapiquí

About this trip

Enjoy a front-row seat to one of nature’s greatest aerial spectacles while contributing to an important community conservation initiative!
Each fall, millions of migrating hawks, kites, vultures, and falcons soar over the lush rainforests of north-central Costa Rica on their journey south. This program centers around the Raptor Migration Festival in Sarapiquí, a grassroots event designed to highlight the natural and cultural significance of these migratory raptors while promoting their conservation through education, art, and sustainable tourism.
The festival brings together birders, community members, researchers, and conservation partners for birding, workshops, performances, and more. Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and tastes of the festive atmosphere, engage with local conservation leaders, contribute directly to on-the-ground efforts, and learn more about the festival’s backstory directly from the people who played a key role in bringing it to life. Daily bird walks, guided hikes, and a night tour offer chances to spot a wide range of avian species, from neotropical migrants to mid-elevation endemics.

Highlights

  • Ascend the Refugio Lapa Verde canopy platform for unparalleled views of raptor kettles numbering in the thousands or even hundreds of thousands.
  • Enjoy informal discussions with conservation leaders, learning firsthand about efforts to protect endangered species and ecosystems.
  • Actively participate in festival preparations alongside the Refugio Lapa Verde team, contributing directly to a major environmental initiative.
  • Go birding in the 500-acre rainforest reserve at Selva Verde Lodge, a birding hotspot where more than 450 species have been recorded.
  • Visit Poás Volcano and the surrounding landscape for the chance to see mid-elevation species such as Black Guan, Talamanca, Fiery-throated, and Volcano Hummingbirds, Mountain Elaenia, Black-and-yellow Silky-flycatcher, and Slaty Flowerpiercer.
