Andrea Holbrook Joins Two Boards to Support Important Global Initiatives

Holbrook lends her experience in sustainable travel to CREST and provides Climb for Cancer with a personal perspective

GAINESVILLE, FL, October 2, 2017 – Andrea Holbrook, president of Holbrook Travel, recently joined the boards of two noteworthy organizations: CREST (Center for Responsible Travel) and the Climb for Cancer Foundation. “I am thrilled to be invited to support these prominent organizations for two very worthwhile causes,” she stated. “They represent important missions and are both personally meaningful to me.”

Andrea Holbrook has been a member of the Holbrook Travel team since 1993 and president since 1998. Throughout that time, she has not only shaped a standard for sustainable, mutually supportive, and affordable travel, but she has also forged lasting relationships with non-profit health and educational organizations. Much of her work connects the promotion of eco-tourism while benefitting other efforts such as education and health. Andrea has been a long-standing board member of the Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center—a non-profit organization in Costa Rica that connects communities with conservation through education and ecotourism.

“With Andrea’s experience, our mission to expand awareness of the importance of sustainable travel will be further advanced,” said CREST Co-Founder Martha Honey. CREST is a research organization based in Washington, D.C. that uses goal-oriented studies to enhance the positive effects of responsible tourism. CREST supports governments, private businesses, non-profit groups, and international foundations in identifying and forging solutions to problems concerning tourism. In addition to consultation, the organization has also founded a number of international action-based programs pertaining to conservation, sustainable finance in tourism, green-travel, and bio-cultural protection of indigenous regions.

Holbrook has been a long-standing member of CREST and a supporter of its objectives in fostering responsible travel. On Wednesday of this week, Holbrook Travel co-sponsored an event for World Tourism Day, hosted by CREST and the UN Environment Office. In her new board position, Andrea will provide hands-on experience in developing community-based conservation.

The Climb for Cancer Foundation (CFC) is a Gainesville, FL-based 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that has founded many programs (and funded others) whose aim is to provide relief to cancer patients and their families.

To raise funds for their programs, CFC Co-Founder Ron Farb sought to combine his passion for outdoor adventure with his desire to see cancer cured in his lifetime. “I’ve been working with Andrea Holbrook for several years now,” said Farb, “and her knowledge of outdoor education and passion for helping people in need is extraordinary. We are grateful to have her on our board.” Andrea, like so many people, has had family members personally affected by cancer.

Climb for Cancer’s fundraising treks and hikes are typically led by Farb, and they serve as CFC’s main modality for fundraising. In 2014, accompanied by Andrea, Farb joined one of Holbrook’s trips to Patagonia, with the intention of testing out possible hiking routes in the region. Since then, Holbrook Travel has been partnered with CFC and has helped organize three climbing trips to Costa Rica and Patagonia; CFC is slated for three additional trips in 2018 (to Ecuador, the Galápagos Islands, and Peru). The relationship has been fruitful in both directions, and as a result Andrea will have an active voice on CFC’s board.

Holbrook Travel has been enriching lives through travel since 1974. The Holbrook story began when founder Giovanna Holbrook led a group of academics and naturalists to the Galápagos Islands. Building on its expertise in natural history, the company continued to provide affordable educational programs for groups and individuals around the world. In 1982, during an ornithological field study in Costa Rica, Giovanna learned of a 500-acre tract of old growth forest that was destined for the chainsaw. She purchased the land and renovated its old house to become the Selva Verde Rainforest Lodge & Reserve. Today Selva Verde is a world renowned eco-lodge committed to advancing the practice of sustainable tourism—a practice that guides all of Holbrook’s trips in Latin America, Africa, Asia, the Pacific and beyond. In addition to signature birdwatching tours, Holbrook offers unique itineraries based on natural history, gardening, photography, culture, and other special interests.
