This past summer, I led a group of students from the Pedro Menendez High School Academy of Future Healthcare Professionals on a medical outreach adventure to Costa Rica.
I was looking for a way to expose my students to medical settings in a different culture, and also share some of their skills in a way that could benefit the local communities we visited. We were able to visit local clinics, emergency medical facilities, medicinal gardens, learn about Costa Rica’s government healthcare system, and teach first aid and CPR to locals at Holbrook’s community learning center at Selva Verde Lodge in Sarapiquí.
Each day was filled with excitement as we also experienced the breathtaking landscapes around Arenal and Sarapiquí areas, from volcanos to waterfalls and rainforests. Our amazing guide, Reimer, kept us on the go so we could experience all that this beautiful country has to offer!! We left with the most amazing memories and a great love for Costa Rica. In fact, my students have convinced me to make this an annual trip and we are already planning our return trip for next summer!!
