Marion Grzanowski's Adventures: Galápagos and Machu Picchu Days 4 & 5

Read days 2 & 3 here. Marion Grzanowski recently traveled to the Galápagos Islands and Machu Picchu with Road Scholar.  A day by day account of his travels can be found at http://2012-gimp-adventure.blogspot.com/ Day Four: Still at sea, Marion and Carol's group visit the unique destination of Leon Dormido for a fun morning of swimming and snorkeling.  They later visit the stunning white-sand beaches of Cerro Brujo, where they spend the later part of the morning searching for some of the local wildlife. [caption id="attachment_4518" align="aligncenter" width="550"]Marion G Blog Post 4 Photo by: Marion Grzanowski[/caption] The afternoon is spent on Isla Lobos.  It is sure to be a fun filled afternoon, because the island is home to the always entertaining sea lions!  What else will they encounter?
Cerro Brujo (Wizard Hill) is one of the nicest white-sand beaches found in the islands.  It is situated in a secluded spot on the western side of San Cristobal, with beautiful views of Leon Dormido in the distance.  We walked along the beach trail searching for marine iguanas, sea lions, and Sally Lightfoot crabs.
Day Five: Day five is spent at Gardner Bay, Española Island.  It's a leisurely morning on the southernmost island in the Gálapagos. At Gardner Bay, the group has another encounter with sea lions.  Swimming and snorkeling here provide a great opportunity to spot a wide variety of marine life up close. On an afternoon trip to Punta Suárez the group is looking for the Galápagos Hawk and the red-form of the marine iguana.  What else will they observe this afternoon?  Española is the southernmost island in the Gálapagos.  It is best known as the nesting place of the rare Waved Albatross.  Most of the world's population of these majestic birds nest here.

Photo of the Month: November 2025
Above: On the way to see baobab trees at sunset on the red dirt roads in the bush of Madagascar, we stopped as the young goat herders crossed directly in front of us, looking like majestic figures in the sunlit, dusty glow. It felt like the scene of a movie, and this photo captured the feeling of that moment perfectly.
