Chile Elections on November 17

From Frontier Medex Hot Spots Report, November 15:

Chileans will take to the polls on 17 November 2013 to vote for the country’s president, as well as 120 members of the lower House of Congress and 20 out of the 28 Senate seats. Preliminary polls indicate that former President Michelle Bachelet of the New Majority party will likely win the election over her main rival, Evelyn Matthei of the ruling Alianza coalition, although it remains unclear if she will receive enough votes to avoid a 15 December runoff. While Bachelet’s victory seems to be a near certainty, it remains unclear whether or not her coalition will win enough votes to push through her proposed reforms, including an increase in corporate taxes to fund education reform and changes to the country’s dictatorship-era constitution. The new president will take office in March 2014.

Above: On the way to see baobab trees at sunset on the red dirt roads in the bush of Madagascar, we stopped as the young goat herders crossed directly in front of us, looking like majestic figures in the sunlit, dusty glow. It felt like the scene of a movie, and this photo captured the feeling of that moment perfectly.
