Gustafson India Photo Safari: Day 8 & 9

Day Eight It was a lovely morning for a last drive in Bandhavgarh. After the heavy rains the night before, the tigers went to hiding and we saw no sign of them. That’s not as bad as it seems because we had time to stop for other things. We got great chances at portraits and action shots of fighting spotted deer. Storks, raptors, and woodpeckers were among the many bird species we saw but my favorite was an Indian roller perched next to a pale peach-colored blossom. Back at the lodge we packed up, had brunch, loaded up three vans and drove to our next destination, Kanha National Park.  Day Nine We had an early up and early out for our first drive in Kanha. This park’s landscape is dominated by emerald green saal tree forests, broken up by open meadows and ponds. Our first game was a pair of barra singa swamp deer, a specialty of the park. Next up was a pair of jackals eating an old spotted deer kill, followed by a troop of langmonkeys playing with tiny babies. There were raptors on perfect perches, a jungle owlet with a soft green background and even a big male leopard that came out of the bush and walked in the clear for a couple hundred meters. Two couples got the chance to go on elephants through the forest to track tigers. They loved it. Maybe I’ll get to try it tomorrow. This afternoon was just a little of this and a little of that. No tiger sightings were made. We had a nice show and tell with guests showing some of their favorite shots from their game drives. There are some amazing things out there and people are getting the shots! Previous Day Next Day

Photo of the Month: November 2025
Above: On the way to see baobab trees at sunset on the red dirt roads in the bush of Madagascar, we stopped as the young goat herders crossed directly in front of us, looking like majestic figures in the sunlit, dusty glow. It felt like the scene of a movie, and this photo captured the feeling of that moment perfectly.
