Marion Grzanowski's Adventures: Galápagos & Machu Picchu Days 16 & 17

Marion Grzanowski recently traveled to the Galápagos Islands and Machu Picchu with Road Scholar.  Day by day accounts of his travels can be found at http://2012-gimp-adventure.blogspot.com/ Read days 14 & 15 here. Day 16: This morning everyone is flying back to Lima from Cusco.  Contrary to their prior brief view of the city earlier in the trip, the group is able to explore more of what the city has to offer.  An excursion through Lima takes them to the city center, Plaza de las Armas.  Marion and the rest of the party witness historic landmarks of Peru such as the La Catedral, the most important church in all of Peru.  The La Catedral is so important because it is allegedly home to the tomb of the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro.  The afternoon ends with a culinary presentation and tasting of Peruvian food at a local restaurant.

A beautiful colonial building is thought to house the remains of Francisco Pizarro -- whether the bones are authentic or not is a matter of conjecture.
The time has come for most of the group to head to the airport.  Marion and Carol soon depart for the U.S. Day 17 Marion and Carol have departed Lima.  After two flight transfers they are back in Detroit. Although it will be an adjustment for them to not be traveling in a party of 20+ anymore, they are eager to share their travel stories. Marion Grzanowski was once an 8-year-old boy who dreamed of photographing historic landmarks and scenery of places far away, and he is now a man making his dreams an adventurous, memorable reality. Photo of the Month: November 2025
Above: On the way to see baobab trees at sunset on the red dirt roads in the bush of Madagascar, we stopped as the young goat herders crossed directly in front of us, looking like majestic figures in the sunlit, dusty glow. It felt like the scene of a movie, and this photo captured the feeling of that moment perfectly.
