Gustafson Photo Safari - Tanzania Trip Report 2013

Departure The flights to Tanzania were so easy! I was asleep before we took off and I woke up when the plane started its descent into Schipol. From there to Kilimanjaro was just a book and two movies away. Everyone arrived and we were only missing one piece of luggage. We got a nice ride from the airport in the Roy Safaris luxury bus where I was able to share expectations with people and find their interests. All my safari stuff was waiting at the African Tulip: the big lens, clothes, Wimberley, and plug. Life is good. We had a 7:00 breakfast, loaded up at 7:30 with a stop at the bank and the grocery store, and hit Tarangire! Day 1 We all met for breakfast at 7:00, loaded up and went for groceries at the Shop Rite (Fanta Passion!). The Balloon Camp at Tarangire is fabulous! It has lovely permanent tents with really nice bathrooms and a bed in the middle surrounded by a desk, couch, bench, and armoire. The wind across the ridge line is so relaxing. white-bellied-go-away-bird The afternoon was gloomy and overcast so the game drive was slow, but it was a great training session to get used to the vehicles, the tracks, and the drivers. I was with Val and we had some good luck with fighting zebras, White-bellied and Bare-faced Go-away-birds… bunches of them! Zebras That night my bed felt GREAT! Next post >

Photo of the Month: November 2025
Above: On the way to see baobab trees at sunset on the red dirt roads in the bush of Madagascar, we stopped as the young goat herders crossed directly in front of us, looking like majestic figures in the sunlit, dusty glow. It felt like the scene of a movie, and this photo captured the feeling of that moment perfectly.
