Trip report: Birding in Patagonia with San Diego Audubon Society

The San Diego Audubon Society is wrapping up their birding in Patagonia program. Trip leader Karen Straus shared these highlights from the field. Enjoy!

"San Diego Audubon's Patagonia trip begins!"

"San Diego Audubon had a wonderful but sleep-deprived day of birding and touring Santiago, Chile. Then an incredible late lunch that started with Pisco Sours and Empanadas and ended with Creme Brûlée and espresso. Next stop: Punta Arenas at midnight."

"18 hours on the road today, some of it dirt, driving through Tierra del Fuego to a King Penguin colony. Was it worth it? YEEESSSS!"

"Patagonia must be the only place in the world where you can see penguins and flamingoes on the same day. Chilean Flamingoes in Tierra del Fuego with San Diego Audubon."

"Back from an incredible expedition on Via Australis through Patagonia's Magellan Passage."

"During our Ainsworth Bay birding hike in Patagonia we shared the trail with a couple of cuties, the South American Gray Fox, also called the Patagonian Fox. They were fearless, trotting along the trail very close to us."

"Another incredible day in Chile. We sampled wines in the Valle Casa Blanca wine country, birded the rocky shores of the seaside resort town of Viña del Mar, and had a fantastic lunch (with more wine!) in historic Valparaiso, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We bid farewell yesterday."

Photo of the Month: November 2025
Above: On the way to see baobab trees at sunset on the red dirt roads in the bush of Madagascar, we stopped as the young goat herders crossed directly in front of us, looking like majestic figures in the sunlit, dusty glow. It felt like the scene of a movie, and this photo captured the feeling of that moment perfectly.
