The Copán ruins, known as Xukpi to the Maya, are some of the most spectacular ruins in the southern range of the Mayan empire. This particular altar was built in 736 AD by the ruler Waxaklajuun Ub’aah K’awiil and represents the rain god, Chac. It was incredible to get to see the intricate carvings in person. These ruins really provided a unique highlight to an already exciting trip. Even with all the wildlife and activities, any trip to Honduras would not be complete without  spending several hours walking back in time.
