Day 13 / July 3, 2013 Today we had our suitcases out early so the driver could load the bus and we left after breakfast for Cusco. The Posada del Inca in Yucay was a lovely hotel! While in Cusco we visited Korikancha, the Inca temple, whose walls were said to have been sheathed in gold and silver and dedicated to worship of the sun, before the Spaniards sacked it and used it for fortification and ultimately the foundation of the Convent of Santo Domingo.
After visiting the Basilica Cathedral, we went to ruins of Sacsayhuaman, the famous Inca fortress that the Spaniards found difficult to conquer due to the terraces that their horses could not climb. Afterwards, we had a yummy lunch at the most popular local chicken restaurant which puts Kentucky Fried Chicken to shame! By this time our luggage had been delivered to the hotel and we had less than an hour to do some souvenir shopping. It goes without saying that teenagers are going to want to get t-shirts and knickknacks for their friends and family. Afterwards, we re-grouped and walked to the San Blas area for a hands-on art lesson. Since our shopping was stopped short, we returned to the hotel and went back out to make our final purchases before meeting Gustavo Leon, a famous Peruvian musician that introduced us to the array of musical instruments of the many different cultures of Peru! Then my favorite part of the day, wood fired PIZZA for dinner! It lived up to my every expectation! Next post >> Previous post >> Learn more about this program >>

Above: On the way to see baobab trees at sunset on the red dirt roads in the bush of Madagascar, we stopped as the young goat herders crossed directly in front of us, looking like majestic figures in the sunlit, dusty glow. It felt like the scene of a movie, and this photo captured the feeling of that moment perfectly.
