Birding the Route of the Maya: Part 3

Day 02: February 19, 2014

We met in the dining hall for fruit and coffee at 6 a.m. and then boarded a boat for a tour of the Crooked Tree Lagoon.  As mentioned before, the water level was high and many of the seasonal “visitors” to the lake were not visible since the feeding areas were underwater.  We did see a few aquatic birds, but after a pleasant boat ride we headed back to the lodge for scrambled eggs and delicious sautéed spinach for breakfast.

We finished breakfast around 10 a.m. and continued birding along the road into the lodge where we had had such good success the previous day. This is low level land and there were areas that were flooded with numerous species of birds to watch. After a late lunch, we met the Belize Audubon agents, Dirk Francisco, and Derrick the field agent at Crooked Tree.  After their informative presentation on the flora and fauna of Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, we bussed away from the lagoon to the pine forest for some late afternoon birding.  This proved to be a great outing and upon return we had time to rest a short time before dinner was served.

Bird Eye View Lodge has a hotspot for internet in the newly built lobby, but it wasn’t that fast or that easy to stay connected, so I turned in early.  The downstairs rooms are large and have two double beds in each. Some have views of the lake.

Birds of the Day: Neotropic Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Little Blue Heron, Green Heron, Glossy Ibis, Blue-winged Teal, Osprey, Swallow-tailed Kite, Crane Hawk, Roadside Hawk, Bat Falcon, Limpkin, Northern Jacana, Killdeer and Piping Plover, Lineated Woodpecker, Ringed Kingfisher, Vermilion Flycatcher just to name a few.

Photo of the Month: November 2025
Above: On the way to see baobab trees at sunset on the red dirt roads in the bush of Madagascar, we stopped as the young goat herders crossed directly in front of us, looking like majestic figures in the sunlit, dusty glow. It felt like the scene of a movie, and this photo captured the feeling of that moment perfectly.
