United States | Coastal Birding, Puffins, and Conservation at Hog Island Audubon Camp

About this trip

Hog Island Audubon Camp is an ideal setting for exploring nature, birding, and conservation. With its rich history and ongoing studies, this small island provides a gateway to learning about birds and the natural world. Join Holbrook Travel, Audubon, and fellow birders for a special spring experience in MidCoast Maine. Birding highlights will be migrants heading to breeding grounds and nesting species on nearby islands. Our program includes a day trip by boat to Monhegan Island—a migratory hotspot, vibrant artists’ colony, and picturesque island village. Another day we explore Muscongus Bay and Eastern Egg Rock Island, famous for its nesting Atlantic Puffins and several species of terns. Walks on the mainland take us to a variety of habitats and a great assortment of birds in their most brilliant breeding plumage.

Highlights

  • Cruise Muscongus Bay looking for wildlife and sea birds including Black Guillemots, scoters, and others.
  • Look for nesting Atlantic Puffins and learn about the history of their recovery on Eastern Egg Rock Island, also home to Laughing Gulls, eiders, and nesting terns.
  • Enjoy the spectacular scenery on an excursion to iconic Monhegan Island as we search for songbirds on several short trails.
  • Explore habitats on the mainland with excursions to Great Salt Bay and Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, two birding hotspots.
  • Take part in a series of talks on migration studies, island history, and conservation challenges faced by birds in Maine and all around the world.
  • Attend talks and workhops on a variety of topics, such as seabird conservation, avian migration, tips to improve birding and photography skills, and more!

Departing from Hog Island, we will search for pelagic species as we head 12 miles offshore. This is the peak week of bird migration! Upon our arrival on Monhegan, look for breeding birds and observe migrating species that are heading north. Boxed lunches will be provided at the time of departure, and we will have a picnic in the middle of the day. Monhegan Island, a favorite destination for painters and artists, has become a top destination for birders because of it beauty, amazing avian diversity and magnetism for rare birds. Return to Hog Island in time to relax before dinner. This evening, lecture.

This morning, embark on a boat trip to Eastern Egg Rock, a seven-acre island in outer Muscongus Bay. The island is a berm of massive granite boulders that provide nesting habitat for puffins and guillemots. The small island is also home to Laughing Gulls, eiders, and nesting terns. The rank vegetation, fertilized annually by the birds, is dominated by dense pasture grasses, raspberry, and elderberry. Although we are often able to come quite close to puffins, they stand only 10 inches tall, and binoculars are strongly recommended to enhance your overall experience. Return to Hog Island for an afternoon workshop. After dinner, take in a talk on eBird and other apps.

We transfer to the mainland this morning to Pemaquid Point, a long and relatively narrow peninsula that extends well out into the Atlantic Ocean. It is like going out to sea, which explains why it is a great place for observing seabirds. eBird lists 126 species recorded at Pemaquid Point! From the lighthouse, expect to see Great Cormorants, Black Guillemots, Common Eiders, and Long-tailed Ducks. You may also spot Iceland Gulls, Razorbills, Purple Sandpipers, Rough-legged Hawks, and Black-legged Kittiwakes. Dress for cool and windy weather. Return to camp for dinner and this evening's guest lecture.

After breakfast, gather for a leisurely 30-minute hike to Bingham Cottage to learn about the Artist-in-Residence program, taking in the majestic island forest along the way. Then we'll leave Hog Island for a birding excursion on the mainland with a packed lunch. Our destination is Great Salt Bay Farm, located at the Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust. We'll walk the meadow looking for Bobolinks, Savannah Sparrows, migrating warblers and songbirds. We'll also scan the bay for gulls, ducks, Osprey and Belted Kingfishers. Return for a workshop and time for reflection before a special Maine treat - a lobster dinner. The lobsters are fresh off the boat and served buffet-style, outside by the sea. A vegetarian and a meat option are available as well. We gather for farewell in the Fish House.
