Wind Power
The wind is a vast resource for clean, renewable energy. When electricity is
generated using wind power, fossil fuels are being avoided. Part of the
greenhouse reductions of the ClimateSafe program come from the United States,
where Midwest Renewable Energy Projects, LLC, operates a number of wind farms
in Iowa, Wisconsin and the Dakota’s.
Water Energy
Water flowing in rivers, lakes and the ocean can be used to generate
emissions-free electricity, offsetting the use of carbon based fuels such as
coal. Some of the greenhouse reductions used to neutralize your travel
activities come from Canada, and are generated by Summit Power on the Soo River
Micro Hydro facility near Whistler, in British Columbia.
Energy Efficiency
Energy efficiency is often the most cost effective way to achieve greenhouse
gas reductions. Energy efficiency also reduces energy bills, and improves the
ability of participants to spend money on basic needs such as food or medicine.
Part of the carbon offsets used for ClimateSafe come from changing out
traditional light bulbs with Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL’s) in projects in
Costa Rica and other Holbrook destinations.
Green Buildings
The portfolio of investments that generate ClimateSafe reductions also supports
low-energy sustainable building practices, including LEED buildings, Net Zero
Energy Home development (NZEH), and off-grid homes. These green building
projects are located in Boston and Florida.
Recycled Building Materials
Another way ClimateSafe travel promotes sustainability and
reduces greenhouse reductions is by supporting the use of recycled building
materials. Together with The Reuser and Bearded Brothers, ClimateSafe is
harvesting early 20th century wooden floors, doors, cabinetry, bricks, and
other re-usable materials that keeps waste out of land-fills, and lowers
greenhouse emissions by reducing the need for manufacturing new products.
Projects under consideration
There are several reforestation projects now being
evaluated in the US and Holbrook travel destination areas. We are currently in
discussions with the Organization for Tropical Studies in Costa Rica. Planting
trees is a fantastic way to remove excess CO2 from the atmosphere while
improving the watershed, enhancing wildlife habitat and increasing forest based
revenue from nuts, fruits and tourism activities. All forest projects are
judged for their contribution to bio-diversity, enhancement to the local
economy and effectiveness in harvesting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Additional benefits
ClimateSafe travel has partnered with a leading national
environmental research organization to find out the negative impacts of
renewable energy. Of particular concern is the often deadly interaction between
birds, bats and windmills. The Avian Impact Fund is designed as a
multi-stakeholder research effort to better understand the causes for avian
death, raise awareness and disseminate impact reduction strategies in this
section of the renewable industry.
