R. W. Traip Academy Students
Combining Community Service with Their Global Experience |

|
When Steve Estes , a social studies teacher at R. W. Traip Academy and group
leader, saw how much excitement his Belize program created within the classroom
he started to ask himself how he could spread the positive impact even further.
With input from his creative students, Steve has designed an impressive
pre-trip activity list that includes:
-
Research projects
-
Belize conservation lessons
-
Mentoring local elementary students
-
SOLO Wilderness training
-
CPR and First Aid training
-
Working with local elementary school to gather donations of supplies for
Belizean school children
-
Creating special gifts for their Belizean senior center visit
Research projects included: “Getting to Know Belize” activity, Belize
“Culturegram” analysis, looking up US Department of State “Background Notes”,
finding facts about Belize on the web, and practical trip planning.
The enrichment activities gave students the ability to discuss the benefits of
the trip with potential funders (including Mom and Dad!) They also used this
knowledge to teach elementary students about the rainforest, coral reefs, and
Mayan culture. As they related the importance of understanding other cultures,
the students not only mastered the material but also educated others in their
community.
Steve felt it was equally important to serve his host country as well. By
teaching his students to think about what they might give back in addition to
what they might receive from the experience, he is broadening their view of
themselves as contributors to their world.
