Costa Rica: Chautauqua Short Course Professional Development Program - May 24-30, 2010

Dear Chautauqua Program Participants,
Welcome to the short course: Global Education Inquiry Into Tropical Rain Forest Ecology & Conservation! I have arranged for Holbrook Educational Travel to handle our land-based component for the course. I recommend using them for your air travel as well. Holbrook can easily assist you with your travel arrangements and all you need to do is call them. You may call 800-451-7111 and ask for Lisa Palmese; or you may email her at lisa@holbrooktravelcom. I encourage everyone to arrive in San Jose when I arrive, or at least meet up at the airport when I arrive, in order to travel with me to the field location. The cost to travel to the field location is $120 total for up to 5 participants, or $170 for more than 5. I will cover this for you only if you travel with me; otherwise you will have to make your own travel arrangements to the field site. Additionally, it is not recommended to travel at night, since the roads are not safe at night, especially in Braulio Carrillo. I encourage you to book flights that arrive in the afternoon and not evening. If you can only get a flight that arrives in the evening you will need to arrive a day early and spend the night in San José. Holbrook can book a hotel in San José for around $100.00.
Costa Rica, meaning “rich coast” in Spanish, was given its name by early explorers when they first encountered its verdant coastal forests. Set in the heart of Central America, Costa Rica is world renowned for its beautiful tropical forests, amazing biological diversity, and dedication to environmental conservation. This workshop offers the unique opportunity to complete hands on studies and projects in the tropical rainforest.
