Iceland is an island of contrasts, a land of glaciers, erupting volcanoes, and the midnight sun. Geology and its northerly latitude combine to shape Iceland’s culture. The sun shines round-the-clock in the summer months and under it Vikings created ancient seafaring history. Still the most sparsely populated country in Europe, the country’s uninhabited interior is an arctic desert, punctuated with mountains, glaciers, volcanoes and waterfalls. Experience the natural contrasts during this 8-day excursion as you explore glaciers, icebergs, volcanoes, and hot springs. Invigorate yourself with the adventurous activities available in this unique land. Imagine yourself exploring with the Vikings as you discover their history.
Join us for a specially designed trip for Educators to introduce you to a wide range of geological phenomenon that can be found on the amazing land of Iceland. During the 8 days you will explore volcanoes and volcanic processes, icecaps and glaciers and how both these active-Earth processes interact to form a unique and stunning environment. Wrapped into the trip is seeing how the people utilize their natural resources to survive and how they have developed a fascinating culture.
This trip is designed to expand your knowledge and experience by seeing these processes first hand. An introductory lecture is followed by days on in-site group discussions about what we are experiencing. The group is involved in discovery learning, where we discuss processes based on observations. No previous knowledge of geoscience is required – but by the end of this trip you will certainly be come an advocate of the Earth.
