Learn About Volcanic Activity on an Active Volcano

Join GSA for a specially designed geoscience expedition to the Big Island of Hawaii. This in-depth observation and discussion program focuses on geological formation, environmental context, endemic biological communities, and exploration into what makes Hawaii a natural destination for earth science investigation.

Itinerary Highlights

  • Study geological and volcanological events in the Big Island's rich volcanic and tectonic setting
  • Examine lava flows, summit calderas (craters), tephra ash deposits, fissures, pit craters, lava tubes, fault scarps, littoral cones, a coastal lava delta, and other volcanic features
  • Explore plate tectonic processes in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
  • Explore the Crater Rim visiting such features as a rift zone, collapsed caldera, steam vents, sulfur banks, lava tubes and the site of a lava fire fountain
  • Drive along Chain Of Craters Road and look at more volcanic features including a lava channel, frozen lava falls, pit craters and a vent
  • Hike out over lava flows for a view Of the active flow entering the sea
  • Visit a black sand beach formed from volcanic sand
  • Examine a dramatic green sand beach formed from erosion of olivine surround lava flows
  • Swim on a coral white sand beach and have the opportunity to collect some samples of picrite
  • Hike over a recent lava field to get a view over a shield vent and the active vent of Puu Oo
  • Plus four classroom session to study plate tectonics and volcanoes, volcanic products, teaching about volcanoes in the classroom, and volcanic monitoring and natural hazards
  • Visit Lapahoehoe to see a school devastated by the 1946 Tsunami
  • Plus visit thermal pools, waterfalls, and enjoy time in the seaside towns of Hilo and Kailua-Kona
