Join GSA for a specially designed Geoscience expedition to Costa Rica. Your exploration and field work will take you on a journey of discovery and learning through five of Costa Rica’s six major volcanic areas.

Itinerary Highlights

  • Explore Arenal Volcano, one of the countries most active stratovolcanoes at a height of 5,437 feet
  • Discover Irazu Costa Rica’s highest volcano towering at an astounding 11,261 feet
  • Learn how steam from Miravalles Volcano is used to generate power with a visit Miravalles Geothermal Power Plant
  • Study the broad and well vegetated summit of Poas Volcano and its lakes
  • Examine lava flows, craters, ash deposits, fissures, and other volcanic features
  • Explore abundant secondary volcanic activity: steam and sulfur vents, mud volcanoes, and boiling ponds
  • Participate in lectures by the University of Costa Rica's geological experts as well as the former Costa Rican President Rodrigo Carazo
  • Plus enjoy kayaking, hiking, horseback riding and relaxing in volcanically heated hot springs and much more
