I absolutely love cloud forests -- the fresh, cool air, the abundant growth, and the misty atmosphere all combine for an invigorating photography environment. Nonetheless, obtaining successful landscape images inside cloud forests is a challenge. The growth is so lush and exuberant that it can be difficult to find orderly, pleasing compositions. I was able to find one at this small double cascade inside the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve. On the artistic side, I composed so that the viewer's eye travels diagonally through the frame. On the technical side, I used a slow shutter speed to give a silky texture to the water and a polarizing filter to cut glare and saturate the greens.

There are many wonderful landscape compositions awaiting the photographer in Costa Rica, and I hope that you'll discover some with me on a Holbrook photo expedition!

Tech info: Canon 20D, Tokina 28-70 mm f2.8 zoom lens, cable release, Manfrotto tripod, circular polarizing filter, f22 for 2.5 seconds, ISO 100

I hope you’ll join me in the field soon on a Holbrook photographic safari in Costa Rica!
