July 22 -
Today depart the USA for your overnight flight to Iceland.

July 23 - Reykjavik
In the morning we will arrive at the International Airport where we will meet our local guide. We will then begin our journey to the capital city of Reykjavik where we will enjoy coffee and bakery items. Later we will pay a visit to the Icelandic energy research institute where Dr. Hjalti Franzson will give us a comprehensive introductory geology lecture. Afterwards, we will traverse through volcanic areas to our base in Nesbud, located at the base of Hengill, a volcano that last erupted 200 years ago. While here, we will enjoy a hike in the interesting inter and post glacial ridges around the impressive valley, Dyradalur. Finally we will view the splitting of the continental plates at Thingvellir National Park, the first place in Iceland bestowed UNESCO`s Cultural World Heritage nomination. July 24 - Ranga
This morning we will travel along the shore of Lake Thingvallavatn and over to Laugarvatn Village where we will visit the unique geothermal steam bath. We will also explore the geyser and Gullfoss Falls. Next we will continue along the southern coast via the volcanic crater Kerið, visiting one of the real geothermally heated greenhouses en route to Ranga. Overnight Hotel Highland (BD)

July 25 - Kirkjubæjarklaustur
Today we will journey to the area of the volcano Mt. Hekla, which last erupted in year 2000. We will explore the natural and geological gem Landmannalaugar, renowned for its natural hot pool. Finally we will continue to the Fire Gorge, Eldgja, before arriving in the village Kirkjubæjarklaustur, where we will spend the night. Overnight Hotel Geirland (BD)

July 26 - Kirkjubæjarklaustur
We will spend the day in the surroundings of Europe’s biggest glacier, Vatnajökull. In the morning we will take a walk in National Park Skaftafell and visit the famous Svartifoss (black fall) with its hexagonal basaltic columns. We will also visit the glacier information center of the park to view the changes in the glacial development over the past 1100 years. In the afternoon we will drive to the glacier Lagoon Breiðamerkurlón, where we will take a boat tour and study the floating icebergs. Overnight Hotel Geirland (BD)

July 27 - Kirkjubæjarklaustur
Today we will journey to the magnificent Laki Crater area where there are over 100 craters on a 20 mile long crater row. Here, in 1783, the largest amount of lava in historical time was produced. Overnight Hotel Geirland (BD)

July 28 - Reykjavik
We will start the day driving west along the southern shore to the Reynisfjara black basalt sand shore where we will observe a cave with three hexagonal basalt columns. Next we will enjoy a visit to the famous Skógafoss waterfall. Along the highly volcanic, cliffy coast of Reykjavik peninsula, we will travel to the steam vents of Kleifarvatn and the geothermal power plant at the Blue Lagoon. Here, we will enjoy a lecture by Albert Albertsson, the vice manager of the plant, and soak in the mineral waters of the beautifully blue lagoon. Overnight Hotel Reykjavik Marina (B)

July 29 - Reykjavik
This morning we will pack up and then enjoy a city tour in the capital city of Reykjavik before our transfer to the International Airport for departure flights.
